Hellas Verona Reject Permanent Deal for Gift Orban After Difficult Serie A Campaign

Italian club Hellas Verona FC have reportedly decided not to sign Nigerian striker Gift Orban on a permanent basis following the conclusion of his loan spell from German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim.

The decision marks the end of Orban’s brief stay in Italy and adds fresh uncertainty to the future of the Nigerian forward ahead of the summer transfer window. Verona had initially secured the striker on loan in a bid to strengthen their attacking options during the 2025/26 Serie A season, but reports from Italy indicate the club has now chosen against activating the buy option included in the agreement.

The development comes after a turbulent campaign for both the player and the club, with Verona eventually suffering relegation from Serie A after struggling throughout the season. Sources close to the club suggest management has already begun restructuring plans for life in Serie B, forcing difficult decisions regarding player contracts and transfer priorities.

Orban arrived in Italy with high expectations after previously establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young African forwards during his breakthrough spell with Belgian side Gent. His remarkable goalscoring performances in Belgium attracted widespread attention across Europe and eventually earned him a move to Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga.

However, the transition to German football proved challenging for the Nigerian striker. Limited playing opportunities and inconsistent form affected his progress at Hoffenheim, leading to the decision to send him out on loan to Verona in search of regular football and a chance to rebuild confidence.

The move initially appeared promising. Orban made an encouraging start to life in Serie A and quickly became one of Verona’s most dangerous attacking threats despite the club’s difficult position in the league table. His energy, movement inside the penalty area, and finishing ability provided moments of optimism for supporters during an otherwise disappointing campaign.

The Nigerian forward scored seven league goals and contributed three assists in 28 appearances for Verona across the season. Considering the team’s overall struggles in attack, many football analysts described his numbers as respectable, especially given the pressure surrounding the club’s relegation battle.

Despite those contributions, the second half of the campaign proved far more difficult for the 23 year old striker. His performances declined during the closing months of the season as Verona continued to slide deeper into relegation trouble.

The situation became even more complicated after an off field incident involving the striker and a supporter following Verona’s defeat to AC Milan in April. Reports in the Italian media claimed tensions escalated after Orban declined a fan’s request for a photograph outside the stadium, leading to a confrontation that later generated widespread attention across social media platforms.

Although the matter did not result in formal disciplinary punishment from Serie A authorities, the controversy reportedly affected the player’s relationship with sections of the club’s supporters and management. Verona subsequently excluded the striker from several matchday squads toward the end of the season as speculation surrounding his future intensified.

Orban later issued a public apology regarding the incident, but by that stage many observers believed the damage had already influenced Verona’s long term decision on the player.

Football analysts believe financial considerations also played a role in Verona’s refusal to complete the transfer permanently. Following relegation, the club is expected to reduce spending significantly while prioritizing younger and more affordable players capable of helping the team compete for immediate promotion back to Serie A.

For Hoffenheim, Orban’s return now presents another important decision. The Bundesliga side must determine whether to reintegrate the striker into their squad, approve another loan deal, or listen to permanent transfer offers from interested clubs this summer.

Despite recent struggles, the Nigerian striker remains highly rated in European football circles due to his pace, sharp finishing instincts, and natural attacking intelligence. Many observers still believe he possesses the potential to become a top level striker if he finds the right environment and coaching structure.

The uncertainty surrounding his club future could also impact his ambitions with the Nigerian national team. Orban has long been viewed as one of the promising attacking options for the Super Eagles as Nigeria continues rebuilding its squad ahead of future international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

However, his reduced involvement toward the end of the season and the controversies surrounding his Verona spell may complicate his chances of earning a regular role in the national team setup in the immediate future.

Several clubs across Europe are reportedly monitoring the striker’s situation ahead of the transfer window, with interest expected from teams in Belgium, France, and Turkey. Hoffenheim are also believed to be open to fresh negotiations if suitable offers arrive.

As the summer transfer market approaches, Orban faces one of the most important periods of his professional career. The next move could determine whether he successfully rediscovers the momentum that once made him one of Africa’s fastest rising football stars.

For Nigerian football fans, the hope remains that the talented striker can regain consistency and fulfil the enormous potential that first brought him into the European spotlight.
