Ibadan stampede: Ooni expresses support for ex-queen, prays for vindication
DDM News
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has assured his former wife, Naomi Silekunola, of his prayers and confidence that God will vindicate her amidst her ongoing legal trial following the tragic stampede that occurred during a Christmas funfair she organised in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 4, 2024.
The incident claimed the lives of 35 children, overshadowing what was intended to be a joyous event for underprivileged children.
Oba Ogunwusi, while expressing sympathy for the affected families, absolved his ex-queen of any malicious intent and reiterated that she acted with the pure intention of bringing happiness to disadvantaged children.
The Ooni expressed hope that the court would eventually vindicate Silekunola, as her long-standing record of charitable activities demonstrates her goodwill.
Silekunola, along with Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of Agidigbo FM, and Abdulahi Fasasi, the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, where the event took place, faces a four-count charge.
The charges include conspiracy, causing death by negligence, endangering public safety, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities during the event.
Court proceedings and remand
On December 24, 2024, an Ibadan Magistrate’s Court ordered the remand of Silekunola, Hamzat, and Fasasi in prison custody, pending further investigations and legal proceedings.
Justice K.B. Olawoyin of the State High Court in Ibadan further refused their bail during a hearing on Tuesday but adjourned the ruling on their bail applications to Monday, January 13, 2025.
Supporters of the ex-queen have continued to express their belief in her innocence, urging the judiciary to vindicate her and allow her to resume her philanthropic work.
Some have criticised the Ooni, alleging that he has not taken sufficient steps to ensure her release.
However, the monarch clarified that while he empathises with Silekunola, he cannot interfere with the legal process but remains confident in her vindication.
Ooni’s statement of support
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Otunba Moses Olafare, the Ooni expressed hope that justice would prevail in Silekunola’s case.
He emphasised that interfering with the judicial process would be inappropriate and that the matter should be left to the courts.
“The case is now in court, and we cannot obstruct or interfere with the judicial process,” Olafare said during an interview with Diaspora digital media (DDM).
“As much as we sympathise with her, we must allow the court to do its job without interference.
Only the court can determine her fate, but we are optimistic that God will vindicate her.”
The Ooni highlighted Silekunola’s history of philanthropy and care for children, stating that she had always organised such events with good intentions and that this tragedy was an unfortunate accident.
“She has always been passionate about helping children,” Olafare continued.
“During her time in the palace, she organised similar events multiple times, and there was never any tragedy.
Her intentions for the Ibadan programme were the same—to put smiles on the faces of children.
This tragedy, while deeply unfortunate, does not change her good character, and we believe she will be vindicated.”
He further stated that Silekunola’s past actions speak volumes about her character, and her supporters should continue to believe in her innocence.
Prayers and hope for justice
The Ooni called on well-meaning Nigerians to join him in praying for Silekunola and the other defendants, reiterating his belief that God would vindicate her.
“We are praying for her and hoping for the best.
She has always acted in good faith and has never intended harm to anyone.
Her past actions and charitable spirit are a testament to her integrity.
God will vindicate her, and we believe justice will prevail,” Olafare stated on behalf of the Ooni.
The monarch’s statement has resonated with many of Silekunola’s supporters, who have remained steadfast in their calls for her release and exoneration.
Conclusion
The tragic Ibadan stampede has left a lasting impact on the affected families and the wider community.
As the court continues to deliberate on the matter, the Ooni’s unwavering support for his ex-queen highlights the hope for her vindication and a resolution that balances justice with compassion.
This case also underscores the need for meticulous planning and safety measures for public events, especially those involving children.
Regardless of the court’s decision, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of prioritising safety and accountability.
The Ooni’s prayers and faith in Silekunola’s vindication reflect his confidence in her goodwill and the hope that justice will eventually clear her name.
