Nigerian media personality, model and actress Idia Aisien has built a career that stretches from American newsrooms and international organisations to Nigerian television, Nollywood, fashion, philanthropy and entrepreneurship.
Aisien recently recalled her experience working at Fox 5 News in Washington, DC, describing the pressure of working in a newsroom where information could move around the world within seconds. According to her account, she was working with a system that transmitted real-time information to news stations globally when an earthquake occurred in Washington, DC, and she was told, “Hey Idia, you can go out today.”
The experience offered her an early taste of field reporting and the fast-paced nature of broadcast journalism. Her professional background at Fox 5 is independently documented in her biography and several interviews, although the specific earthquake anecdote comes from Aisien’s own recollection.
Aisien’s journey into media began long before she became a familiar face on Nigerian television. She studied Journalism at the American University in Washington, DC, after initially beginning her studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She later earned a master’s degree in International Public Relations and Global Corporate Communications from New York University.
While studying in the United States, she gained experience with organisations including Fox 5 News and Discovery Communications. She also worked with the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, where her work involved research and communications connected to countries including Burundi, the Central African Republic, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. She later worked with private equity firm Atlas Mara before returning to Nigeria.
In an interview with THISDAY, Aisien explained that she had always been drawn to journalism. She recalled becoming fascinated by the profession after learning about the late journalist Dele Giwa while she was still in school. She also said she watched CNN with her father and imagined herself becoming a successful journalist.
Her return to Nigeria was not originally part of a long-term plan. A private equity position brought her back to the country, but an opportunity to work in television eventually changed the direction of her career. She joined Spice TV, where she became known for shows including “Style 101” and “You Got Issues.”
“Style 101” positioned her prominently within Nigeria’s fashion and entertainment space, while “You Got Issues” allowed her to discuss relationships, marriage, abuse, employment and other social issues. Her official biography notes that “Style 101” featured personalities including Ice Prince, DJ Obi, Poe and Banky W and reached audiences across several African countries.
Aisien later moved into news broadcasting, becoming a business anchor at ARISE News. She told THISDAY that her role involved discussing global business developments and connecting with markets in places such as Hong Kong and London. Her career therefore moved across several seemingly different areas — entertainment, fashion, business news and international affairs.
Beyond broadcasting, Aisien has also been involved in modelling, brand campaigns, events and philanthropic work. She launched the International Development Initiative in Africa, known as the IDIA Project, with a focus on education, poverty alleviation, empowerment and showcasing positive stories about Africa.
In earlier interviews, she spoke openly about the difficulties of building such projects, including funding, logistics and getting organisations and individuals to cooperate. She recalled travelling with a team to Bauchi for an interview only to discover that the person they were scheduled to meet had left, forcing the team to remain in the city for days.
Her interviews have also revealed a strong emphasis on discipline and persistence. In one interview, she recalled how someone who had once doubted her ability eventually contacted her to say she was doing well. Aisien described the moment as one of the defining points in her media career because it reminded her that persistence could change people’s perception.
Her acting career added another major chapter. Aisien made her Nollywood lead debut as Nneka Agu in the 2020 remake of “Nneka the Pretty Serpent.” The role required her to learn Igbo despite not being a native speaker. In a Pulse interview, she revealed that she spent about three months learning the language and worked with an acting coach and an Igbo tutor.
She also made it clear that she did not see the transition into acting as a casual experiment. Aisien said she was still taking acting classes and described herself as determined to succeed, adding that she had never considered taking “No” for an answer.
Her determination was also reflected in one of her most quoted career philosophies. Speaking about her ambitions, she said she wanted to become one of the biggest actresses out of Africa and credited her education and upbringing for her work ethic. She said her parents taught her that working hard and “working clean” should be the standard.
