Indians weep as Kamala Harris loses US presidential election
The Indian village of Thulasendrapuram in southern India has been thrown into mourning as their daughter, Kamala Harris, loses the ongoing United States presidential election.
Donald John Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States in an extraordinary comeback.
The former president had rejected the election result four years ago after he was defeated by Joseph (Joe) Biden.
His action or inaction had sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol leading to destruction of public properties.
Trump won in Wisconsin to grab the 270 threshold needed to clinch the election.
Meanwhile, there was a sense of disappointment in Thulasendrapuram, India.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) learnt Harris’ mother’s family has ancestral ties to the village.
During the campaign, the natives were seen rooting for the Democratic candidate.
Residents in the village were reportedly keenly following the election results on their smartphones.
However, they were left silent as initial enthusiasm faded while the final result is yet to be announced.
The villagers were hoping for a Harris victory and had held special Hindu prayers for her at a local temple, according to AP reports.
Harris’ name was even seen engraved in a list of donors.
Others said they were planning to blast off fireworks and distribute sweets had she won.
“We are sad about it. But what can we do? It was in the hands of the voters of that country.
“They made Trump win. We can only wish Trump well for his victory,” said J. Sudhakar.
The report noted that as results became clearer, few reporters stationed outside the village temple also quickly dispersed.
The village which had been a site of a brief media spectacle and euphoria since Tuesday became almost suddenly deserted.
In the meantime, Trump has won the 2024 presidential election.
His victory marker his return to the White House after serving as the 45th president of the United States.
Trump won an election that will return him to the White House after winning Wisconsin State.
Among his congratulatory messages, Russian President Vladimir Putin is yet to reach out.
It was, however, learnt that Putin is planning to congratulate Trump.
Putin had earlier emphasized that Moscow views the United States as an “unfriendly” country.
Pundits are already speculating that with his relationship with Putin, Trump may help bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
