WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — The All Progressives Congress (APC) United States chapter has urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic governance, describing democracy as the most reliable pathway to sustainable development and national progress as the country marks Democracy Day on June 12.

In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, the APC-USA said the June 12 Democracy Day represents a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history and continues to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy advocates who fought for the restoration and consolidation of civilian rule.

The group noted that despite ongoing socio-economic and security challenges facing the country, democratic governance remains the strongest framework for addressing national issues and achieving long-term development goals.

According to the statement, democracy provides citizens with the opportunity to participate in governance, hold leaders accountable, and contribute to shaping policies that impact national growth and stability.

The APC-USA emphasized that strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency, and ensuring respect for the rule of law are essential components for building a prosperous and united Nigeria.

It further encouraged Nigerians at home and abroad to continue supporting democratic processes, including free and fair elections, civic engagement, and constructive dialogue aimed at improving governance outcomes.

The group also highlighted the importance of national unity, urging citizens to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divisions in order to focus on shared development objectives.

June 12 is observed annually as Democracy Day in Nigeria in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the nation’s history. The date has since become a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle and political evolution.

The APC-USA statement added that the progress recorded since the return to civilian rule in 1999 demonstrates the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic system, while also acknowledging the need for continued reforms to strengthen governance institutions.
