(DDM) — Operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended after a reported drone strike near the airport’s terminals triggered security alerts across the city of Dubai, raising concerns about aviation safety in one of the world’s busiest air travel hubs.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates confirmed that air defense systems were activated following the incident on Saturday as emergency measures were implemented around the airport. The disruption forced aviation officials to halt flights while security agencies assessed the situation and ensured the safety of passengers, airport staff, and airline crews.
Dubai International Airport serves as a major gateway connecting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, handling millions of passengers each year. Because of its central role in global aviation, even a brief disruption can have wide-ranging consequences for international travel.
Witnesses near the airport reported hearing a loud explosion in the sky shortly before a cloud of smoke was seen above parts of the airport area. According to reports from international media agencies, airport authorities immediately activated emergency procedures.
Passengers waiting to board flights were reportedly directed into underground train tunnels within the airport complex as part of precautionary safety measures while the alert was active.
Airline operations were also affected. Emirates announced that all flights to and from Dubai had been suspended temporarily following the incident. The airline later informed passengers that those scheduled to travel between February 28 and March 31 could rebook their flights or request refunds due to the disruption.
Aviation experts say the decision to suspend operations was likely taken to prevent potential risks while security authorities worked to determine the scale of the threat.
Dubai’s aviation hub is a critical component of the region’s economy and global connectivity. It acts as a primary transit point for international travelers and cargo shipments moving across continents.
Following the incident, UAE officials confirmed that an investigation had begun to determine the origin of the drone involved in the strike and to assess whether additional threats remained.
Security measures have also reportedly been intensified across key infrastructure in the country, including airports, seaports, and government facilities.
The alleged drone attack comes amid rising tensions across the Middle East involving Iran and several regional and international actors. In recent weeks, geopolitical tensions have increased following a series of military confrontations and retaliatory strikes across the region.
Although officials have not yet confirmed the full details of the incident or publicly identified those responsible, the event has sparked concern among aviation authorities and travelers worldwide.
Security analysts note that airports are highly sensitive targets due to their strategic economic importance and the potential for global disruption.
For now, aviation officials are focused on restoring normal operations while ensuring that safety protocols remain firmly in place.
Investigations are expected to determine whether the drone strike was part of a wider security threat or an isolated incident affecting the UAE’s aviation infrastructure.
