The Kano State Government has declared Monday a public holiday to honor 22 athletes who died in a road accident. Governor Abba Yusuf’s media aide, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the decision on Sunday. The tragic crash occurred as the athletes returned from the National Sports Festival (NSF).
On Saturday, their bus veered off the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, killing many and injuring others. Governor Yusuf, currently in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He immediately pledged support for the grieving families and the injured survivors.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave athletes,” the governor stated. “This tragedy has left us heartbroken, and we stand with you in this painful moment.” The athletes were returning from the 22nd NSF in Ogun State, where Kano secured 29 medals, including six golds.
Furthermore, the governor assured the public that the government is taking swift action to assist the victims’ families. The public holiday demonstrates solidarity with those affected by this devastating loss. Kano State mourns its fallen heroes, who represented the state with excellence.
This tragedy has overshadowed what should have been a joyous celebration of their achievements. The entire state now unites in grief, remembering the athletes’ dedication and sacrifice. Their legacy will forever inspire future generations in Kano’s sporting community.
