Kwankwaso blasts APC defections as ultimate political sin
DDM News

Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has condemned the recent wave of defections from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), he described the defections as “the worst political sin” and an act of betrayal against the people who voted for the party.
Kwankwaso, who leads the Kwankwasiyya Movement and is a former governor of Kano State, made the statement at his residence on Miller Road in Kano.
He was addressing a group of loyal supporters from Takai Local Government Area who had refused to defect alongside others.
His remarks come in response to the latest political shake-ups in Kano State, including the defection of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu of the Kano South Senatorial District.
Several federal lawmakers from Kano have also recently left the NNPP to join the ruling APC.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the defections have caused significant concern within the NNPP leadership.
The party, which gained massive popularity in Kano during the 2023 general elections, is now facing internal tests of loyalty and cohesion.
Kwankwaso pointed to Kano South as a model of political discipline and principled voting.
He said the people of Kano South rejected gifts such as spaghetti, N200 cash, and Atamfa wrappers during the last election.
According to him, they remained patient and loyal to the NNPP’s ideals and voted based on principles rather than inducements.
He criticised those who won under the NNPP platform but later abandoned the party and its followers.
He accused them of aligning with political forces that prioritise personal and family gain over the welfare of the masses.
Kwankwaso insisted that there is no greater political offense than deserting the party that supported one’s rise to power.
He called the act the highest form of betrayal in politics.
He encouraged the youth to stay vigilant and not be swayed by politicians seeking only personal advantage.
Kwankwaso praised the Takai group for their dedication and refusal to compromise their beliefs.
He told them that confronting the Kwankwasiyya Movement is not an easy mission.
He added that those who attempt to challenge the movement would only understand its strength when the fight begins.
Also present at the event was NNPP State Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa.
Dungurawa applauded the supporters for staying true to the party despite pressure to defect.
He assured them of full reintegration and equal treatment within the party’s structure.
According to him, the party does not discriminate against loyal members, new or old.
The NNPP, founded to offer an alternative to Nigeria’s dominant parties, rose rapidly through grassroots support, especially in Kano.
The party captured several seats during the last elections, positioning itself as a strong regional force.
However, the recent defections have raised questions about internal party management and ideological consistency.
Kwankwaso’s firm stance is seen as an effort to strengthen the party’s base and reassert its core values.
As the 2027 elections approach, the political environment in Kano is likely to become more competitive and turbulent.
The NNPP must now rally its supporters and rebuild trust to maintain its relevance.
Kwankwaso’s words are a clear warning to those thinking of defecting, and a rallying cry to those who believe in the party’s mission.
