The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) recently inspected newly installed modern fish smoking kilns in Bariga’s Ilaje community, Ago Egun.

Meanwhile, the initiative aims to reduce pollution and boost local livelihoods through sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

Additionally, the project aligns with Lagos State’s broader environmental goals, promoting cleaner air and safer working conditions.

Residents welcomed the upgrades, praising LASEPA’s efforts to balance economic growth with ecological preservation in the coastal area.

This LASEPA-RDD Associates Ltd. partnership aims to reduce pollution, enhance public health, and strengthen local fish processors’ livelihoods.

Traditionally, Iwaya residents used smoke-intensive methods that polluted air and endangered health.

The Lagos State Government consequently introduced cleaner technologies through LASEPA, prioritizing environmental protection and community welfare.

During the site visit, LASEPA’s Dr. Tunde Ajayi – represented by Air Quality Director Mrs. Ayodele Oso – monitored emissions and educated residents about the kilns’ advantages.

He confirmed the dual-kiln system would slash emissions using sustainable energy while maintaining product quality.

Ajayi added the initiative employs circular economy principles by repurposing fish waste as poultry feed.

This innovative solution not only minimizes waste but also creates additional economic opportunities for the community.

Dr. Ajayi reaffirmed LASEPA’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly initiatives and improving air quality across Lagos State.

“This project is a testament to our dedication to fostering sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local livelihoods,” he stated.

The initiative underscores the Lagos State Government’s proactive measures to address environmental challenges while supporting economic growth and public health.

The new fish smoking kilns are expected to serve as a model for similar interventions in other communities across the state.
