Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has set an ambitious target for the 2026/27 season, insisting that the club is ready to compete for every available trophy as the Red Devils prepare for a new era under his leadership.

After making a dramatic impact during his interim spell in charge, Carrick has now been handed the permanent managerial role and believes Manchester United have the quality, mentality and determination required to challenge the best teams in England and Europe.

The former England midfielder has made it clear that his objective is not simply to improve United’s position but to restore the winning culture that has historically defined the club.

In a message to supporters published in the club’s official yearbook, Carrick expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete at the highest level.

“We know we’ve got what it takes to beat the best teams in this league,” Carrick said. “Now it’s about doing that over a full Premier League campaign, while also fighting for every trophy available to us.”

The manager praised his players for their commitment and explained that the squad has developed a stronger mentality since he took charge.

According to Carrick, the players understand the responsibility that comes with representing Manchester United and are determined to bring success back to Old Trafford.

Carrick’s confidence comes after an impressive turnaround during his interim period. When he returned to the club in January, Manchester United were facing uncertainty, but he quickly helped stabilise the team and improve performances.

Under his guidance, United climbed from sixth position to finish third in the Premier League, securing a return to UEFA Champions League football. The team also recorded 12 victories in 17 league matches during his temporary spell, a run that highlighted the immediate impact of his coaching methods.

The impressive improvement convinced Manchester United’s hierarchy that Carrick was the right person to lead the club forward, resulting in him receiving a two year permanent contract.

Carrick’s appointment represents a significant moment in his coaching journey. The former midfielder spent more than a decade as a Manchester United player after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.

During his playing career, Carrick became one of the most respected midfielders in English football. His intelligence, passing ability, composure and understanding of the game made him a key figure during one of Manchester United’s most successful periods under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The midfielder won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford. He made more than 450 appearances for United and became known for controlling the rhythm of matches from midfield.

After retiring as a player in 2018, Carrick immediately moved into coaching and became part of the Manchester United coaching staff. He worked alongside managers including José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before eventually taking full responsibility of the team.

His experience around elite football environments has shaped his managerial philosophy, with emphasis on discipline, technical quality and attacking football.

However, not everyone believes Manchester United are immediately ready to challenge for the Premier League title. Club legend Wayne Rooney has urged supporters to remain realistic, suggesting that a top four finish and a domestic trophy would represent meaningful progress.

Rooney acknowledged the positive changes at Old Trafford but warned that competing with established title contenders such as Manchester City and Arsenal will require patience.

Despite those concerns, Carrick remains focused on achieving the highest possible standards.

“We have a huge responsibility here to win and play exciting football. That never changes, and we should always be striving to compete for the biggest trophies,” he said.

To support his ambitions, Manchester United are expected to strengthen the squad during the summer transfer window. The departure of experienced midfielder Casemiro has created a need for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch.

United are reportedly working on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson while also monitoring several other midfield targets, including Aurélien Tchouaméni, Alex Scott and Andrey Santos.

Carrick wants his squad prepared for the demands of domestic competition and Champions League football, with European nights expected to return to Old Trafford.

For Manchester United supporters, the upcoming season represents another opportunity to move beyond years of inconsistency and rebuild a team capable of competing for major honours.

Carrick understands the size of the challenge, but his connection with the club and his belief in the current squad have created renewed optimism.

The 2026/27 campaign will provide the biggest test of his managerial ability as he attempts to transform his impressive start into long term success and bring more memorable moments back to the Theatre of Dreams.
