NANS: “We’ll shutdown UNILAG over fee hikes, if not reconsidered”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued an ultimatum to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) management, warning of a potential shutdown if the institution refuses to reconsider its stance on the proposed fee hike.
NANS said, “we will not condone any exploitative increments. If UNILAG proceeds with implementing the proposed fee hike, we will take action.”
In a statement released by the NANS under the leadership of Senate President Akinteye Babatunde, the association resolved to convene a National Congress at the UNILAG campus.
Senator Babatunde stated that “the congress will remain in session until two key demands are met: the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the institution and the implementation of a genuine fee review process.”
According to him, the congress aims to unite students from across Nigeria, providing a collective voice to advocate for fair treatment and a commitment to accessible, quality education.
He stressed that the continued surge in educational expenses in Nigeria is unjustifiable, especially in light of the inadequate improvements in infrastructure and services, as evidenced by the ongoing challenges with essential campus amenities.
“The student body urges the UNILAG management to initiate transparent dialogue and adopt a responsible approach that prioritizes students’ welfare and academic success.”
“Any measures falling short of this expectation will be met with collective opposition from the student community.”
“We also urge all stakeholders to remember that education is a right, not a privilege.”
“We remain resolute in our mission to ensure that the voices of Nigerian students are heard, and that access to education remains equitable and fair.”
In response to the recent meeting convened between the university management and student representatives, we wish to issue a formal clarification.
“Contrary to any misleading information, we unequivocally deny the existence of any agreement or understanding to implement an annual upward review of student fees,”NANS stated.
“We refute the assertion that student representatives endorsed the aforementioned proposal.”
“Furthermore, we unequivocally condemn any attempts to exploit this inaccuracy to legitimize fee increases that would unfairly impose financial hardships on students and their families.”
“The association expresses its solidarity with the students of UNILAG in their opposition to the recently announced increases in school and hostel fees,” the Nation Newspaper reported.
“We firmly believe that the rationale of financial necessity cannot justify the exploitation of students, particularly when such increments disproportionately impact access to education for thousands of Nigerian youth.”
“We respectfully call upon the pertinent authorities to reevaluate the recent fee increases and investigate alternative measures that prioritize affordability, equity, and student welfare, thereby ensuring that quality education remains accessible to all.”
