The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on states yet to submit their reports on the proposed State Police to do so by September 9, 2024.
A six-day deadline has been issued to Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which are states yet to submit their reports on the proposed establishment of state police.
The council said failure to meet this deadline will result in the states being bound by any decisions made by the NEC in their absence.
Acting Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, disclosed this during a press briefing following the 144th NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The initiative is part of efforts to address widespread security challenges across the country, including the North-East, North-West, North-Central, South-West, South-East, and South-South regions.
Mr. Lawal highlighted the importance of the proposal, noting that NEC had previously called for submissions from states to assess the feasibility of establishing State Police.
The NEC’s push for State Police comes amid increasing concerns about the need for a more localized security apparatus to combat rising insecurity in various parts of the country.
