The Federal Government has issued a warning to Nigerians about a new COVID-19 variant that has been detected in 29 countries worldwide. The variant, known as the Omicron variant, has been classified as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the Fedaral Ministry of Health, the new variant has been detected in several countries. Including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. The government warned that the variant is highly transmissible and has the potential to evade the immune system.
“The Federal Government is aware of the new COVID-19 variant that has been detected in 29 countries,” said Dr. Osagie Ehanire, the Minister of Health. “We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.”
The government advised citizens to continue to follow the COVID-19 protocols. Including wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, and washing hands regularly. The government also urged citizens to get vaccinated against COVID-19, saying that the vaccine is effective against the new variant.
“We want to assure Nigerians that we are working closely with the WHO and other international health organizations to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Ehanire.
