ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said Nigeria urgently needs new leadership, arguing that the country requires a fresh direction to overcome its worsening economic and security challenges.
Obi made the remarks while criticizing the administration of President Bola Tinubu, claiming the current government has failed to adequately address issues affecting millions of Nigerians. He said rising inflation, insecurity, unemployment and the high cost of living have continued to place severe pressure on citizens across the country.
According to Obi, Nigeria deserves leadership that is competent, accountable and focused on delivering practical solutions to the nation’s problems. He maintained that the country’s abundant human and natural resources can only be fully utilized under a government committed to transparency, prudent economic management and inclusive development.
The former Anambra State governor urged President Tinubu to acknowledge the country’s difficulties and allow a new generation of leadership to emerge. He argued that effective governance requires the capacity to unite Nigerians, restore public confidence and implement policies that improve the welfare of citizens.
Obi stressed that national development cannot be achieved without tackling insecurity, creating jobs, supporting businesses and investing in critical sectors such as education, healthcare and infrastructure. He said leaders must prioritize the interests of the people over political considerations.
He also called on Nigerians to remain committed to democratic principles and continue demanding accountability from those in public office. According to him, meaningful change will only come through responsible leadership, active citizen participation and strong democratic institutions.
Obi’s comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify, with opposition figures increasingly criticizing the federal government’s performance and outlining alternative visions for Nigeria’s future. His latest remarks add to the growing national debate over governance, economic recovery and the leadership needed to address the country’s longstanding challenges.
