Nigeria’s Defence Minister vows to eliminate bandits, terrorists, others

The Minister of State Defense, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has on October 9, 2024, in Sokoto, made known government’s plan to eliminate bandits, terrorists and other criminal gangs in the northwestern region of Nigeria.

Matawalle, speaking to newsmen, confirmed his presence in Sokoto to spearhead a fresh offensive against bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements terrorizing residents in the region.

According to the report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), President Bola Tinubu had directed Matawalle and military chiefs to relocate to Sokoto.

The move forms part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle insecurity in the region.

It is said to aim at flushing out bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements terrorizing the area.

Speaking on some recent achievements, the Minister of Defense, said: “Significant progress has been made in our fight against insecurity.

“Our troops have successfully eliminated notorious gang leaders and members in various locations, leading to a restoration of relative peace in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states.”

Matawalle, expressed confidence that the military’s progress will continue, achieving success through Operation Fansan Yamma in the fight against Northwest criminals.

He reaffirmed his commitment to Northwest states security, guaranteeing relentless efforts to overcome pervasive challenges through successful military interventions.

The Defense Minister said: “You are not alone in this fight.

“We pledge unwavering support and commitment to defeating bandits and their sponsors, freeing our communities from fear and violence.”

“The federal government, will continue to prioritize the welfare, and motivation of our soldiers and security agencies, empowering them to triumph over this threat.”

He added: “We salute the bravery, and the sacrifices of our military personnel, and security agencies in their tireless battle against insecurity.”

Matawalle praised Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State for his invaluable support in ensuring the operation’s success, and urged other governors, political leaders, clerics, and stakeholders to back the presidential initiative.

“Effective collaboration with the federal government, is crucial in our quest to defeat these bandits and achieve our objectives.

“We must unite to dismantle their operations, using both forceful and strategic methods, leaving no room for their escape or manipulation,” he noted.

The Minister, urged the media to refrain from spreading information, that could fuel banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.

He emphasized the need for responsible reporting among members of the press.

Matawalle, meanwhile, announced his plans to visit Katsina, Zamfara, and Kebbi, stressing the need for collective support.

He urged governors, religious leaders, politicians, and community heads to join forces to ensure success in the fight to combat insecurity.
