No more 1,500 Naira: Cooking gas prices crash in Nigeria

Prices of liquefied natural gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has dropped across the country.
Dealers have adjusted the prices for refilling cylinders, offering relief to consumers who have been grappling with rising costs of living.
The new prices, which came into effect on Friday, March 14, 2025, mark a notable reduction from the previous rates, providing a much-needed respite for many Nigerians.
*Price Adjustments Across the Country
According to a market survey conducted by Diaspora Digital Media, the price of a 1kg cooking gas cylinder, which previously sold for N1,500 in some retail outlets in Ogun and Lagos states, has now dropped to N900.
Similarly, the cost of refilling a 2kg cylinder has been reduced to less than N2,600.
The price drop is not limited to smaller cylinders.
For instance, the average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder, which was as high as N17,000 in October 2024, has now fallen to N13,750.
This downward trend is consistent across various cylinder sizes, as confirmed by dealers and consumers alike.
*Dealers Confirm Price Reduction
Kunle Ajami, a manager at a cooking gas plant in Lagos, confirmed the price adjustments, attributing the changes to fluctuations in the cost of purchasing gas from marketers.
“There is a massive drop compared to what people were paying last year. We, cooking gas retailers, sell based on how we buy from marketers. If the price is high, we adjust,” Ajami explained.
The price reduction has been welcomed by Nigerians, many of whom have taken to social media to share the new rates and express their relief.

Speaking at a two-day LPG Expo in Lagos, Ekpo emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing targeted policy interventions to accelerate LPG adoption and remove barriers hindering investment in the industry.
*A Welcome Relief for Nigerians
The reduction in cooking gas prices comes as a relief to many Nigerians who have been struggling with the high cost of living.
With inflation and rising food prices already putting pressure on household budgets, the drop in LPG costs is expected to ease some of the financial burdens faced by families.
As the government and industry stakeholders work to stabilize the market, consumers are hopeful that the new prices will remain consistent, providing long-term benefits for households across the country.
