NOA, Health foundation rallies stakeholders against Lassa Fever

The National Orientation Agency is collaborating with Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria to hold a Health Policy Dialogue and disseminate useful information on the 2014 National Health Act to Nigerians.

As part of engagements with stakeholders to mitigate the spread of Lassa Fever in the country and eliminate all forms of health scourges, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) is collaborating with the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON) to hold a Health Policy Dialogue and disseminate useful information on the 2014 National Health Act to Nigerians.

NOA Director General, Mr. Mike Omeri announced this at a joint press briefing by NOA and HERFON in Abuja.

Omeri said the dialogue which will hold in Abuja next week will help to educate Nigerians about the provisions of the Act and promote its effective implementation at all levels, thereby helping not only to check the Lassa Fever disease but also to promote the general health and wellbeing of Nigerians. 

He said the dialogue is aimed at promoting learning and sharing amongst high level government officials, key experts and stakeholders in the health sector while providing necessary feedback to government and other stakeholders for the effective implementation of the Act.

The NOA Director General who described the Health Act as a useful tool for achieving Universal Health Coverage of all Nigerians said the Health Policy Dialogue will be held on a sustainable basis for effectiveness.

Lending his voice, the HERFON Acting Executive Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Abanida decried the nation’s current poor health indices, noting that a situation where there are only five references to the health of Nigerians in the Constitution necessitated the enactment of the National Health Act as a comprehensive law addressing health issues in the country. 

He said the Act covers areas and aspects of healthcare delivery system including research and technology development but regretted that there is still a wide gap in understanding of the Act amongst Nigerians.

Abadina was therefore optimistic that the Dialogue would lead to a demand by Nigerians for implementation of the provisions of the Act while galvanizing stakeholders across the country for coordinated action against Lassa Fever.
