Northern Lights May Be Visible Across 10 U.S. States Tonight Amid Geomagnetic Storm Watch

A surge of solar activity could illuminate skies across parts of the northern United States tonight, as forecasters warn of a potential geomagnetic storm capable of making the Northern Lights visible to millions.

The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G1-level geomagnetic storm watch following a coronal mass ejection (CME) released from the sun earlier this week. Although classified as minor, the storm may still be strong enough to push the Aurora Borealis farther south than usual.

Why tonight’s display could stand out

Space weather experts note that the timing coincides with the period surrounding the spring equinox historically one of the most favourable times for auroral activity. During this window, Earth’s magnetic field aligns more effectively with solar winds, increasing the likelihood of visible light displays.

While recent geomagnetic activity has eased slightly, the incoming CME is expected to deliver enough energy to potentially trigger renewed auroral visibility late Thursday night.

States with the highest viewing potential

Forecasters have identified 10 states with the best chance of witnessing the phenomenon:

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Minnesota
  • Wisconsin
  • Michigan
  • Maine
  • Washington
  • Idaho
  • Vermont
  • New Hampshire

Among these, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine are considered prime viewing areas, where auroral displays are more likely even under moderate storm conditions. In the remaining states, visibility may depend on stronger geomagnetic activity and favourable local conditions.

Best time and conditions for viewing

The optimal viewing window is expected between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. Experts advise moving away from urban areas, as light pollution can significantly reduce visibility. Rural locations, open landscapes, and areas with clear northern horizons offer the best chance of seeing the lights.

Auroral activity often appears in bursts rather than continuous displays, making patience essential. Observers are encouraged to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes outdoors to allow their eyes to adjust and improve the likelihood of spotting the phenomenon.

Continued solar activity expected

For those who miss tonight’s event, scientists note that the current equinox period continues to favour aurora visibility for several more weeks. With solar activity remaining elevated heading into the second quarter of 2026, additional opportunities to witness the Northern Lights may arise.

Real-time updates on geomagnetic conditions and aurora forecasts are available through official space weather monitoring channels.
