NCE: Nigeria plans NYSC-equivalent scheme for graduates

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially announced an increase in the monthly stipend for corps members, with the new allowance set at N77,000, starting from February 2025.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, made this known while addressing members of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II during their orientation in Katsina State.

According to Ahmed, the increment has already been included in the 2025 Federal Government budget.

He explained that since the January payroll had already been processed, the implementation of the new stipend would begin from the following month.

“This month (January) has already ended, but once the budget is passed, you will start receiving N77,000 from February instead of the usual N33,000,” he stated.

The announcement has generated excitement among corps members, as the increase represents a significant jump from the current N33,000 monthly allowance.

Ahmed emphasized that this revision was approved by the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve the welfare of corps members.

He urged corps members to demonstrate dedication, commitment, and discipline during their service year, stating that such efforts would reflect positively on both the NYSC and the government.

NYSC prioritizes corps members’ welfare and security

Beyond the salary increment, Ahmed reassured corps members that their safety and well-being remain a top priority for the NYSC.

He emphasized that no corps member would be posted to areas considered unsafe due to security challenges.

“We will not send our corps members to any location facing security threats. Wherever we deploy them, they should be assured that the environment is safe and secure for them to serve,” he affirmed.

This assurance comes in response to concerns about corps members being posted to regions with ongoing security risks.

The NYSC has faced criticism in the past regarding deployment policies, particularly in states affected by insecurity.

However, Ahmed maintained that the scheme has taken necessary precautions to ensure that all postings are done with safety considerations in mind.

Corps members urged to appreciate NYSC’s efforts

The NYSC Director General also encouraged corps members to show gratitude for the government’s efforts by actively contributing to their places of primary assignment.

He noted that the increased allowance reflects the government’s recognition of the importance of the NYSC scheme in national development.

“The government has demonstrated its commitment to your welfare. In return, we expect that you will be diligent, responsible, and professional in your conduct throughout the service year,” he advised.

The NYSC plays a crucial role in national unity, deploying young graduates across the country to serve in different sectors such as education, health, and rural development.

Over the years, it has been instrumental in bridging cultural and regional divides, fostering inter-state integration, and promoting community service.

With the new allowance in place, many corps members believe the financial relief will allow them to focus better on their primary assignments and community development projects.

Some have expressed optimism that the raise could reduce financial struggles, especially for those posted to states with a high cost of living.

As the NYSC prepares to implement the revised stipend, corps members across the country eagerly anticipate the financial boost.

The government’s commitment to increasing their allowance signals a positive step toward enhancing the experience and motivation of participants in the scheme.
