A nurse identified as Joy Ezeugwu has been arrested following the circulation of a viral video highlighting poor conditions at a public hospital in Enugu State.
Ezeugwu, who works at Uwani General Hospital, was reportedly taken into custody by officers from the Police Force Headquarters Annex in Enugu.
The development was brought to public attention by education technologist Alex Onyia, who disclosed the arrest on social media. According to the information shared, the police action was linked to a complaint allegedly initiated by officials associated with her former training institution.
The nurse had earlier been suspended in April after a video she recorded surfaced online. The footage showed deteriorating working conditions at the hospital, including a lack of electricity and running water. Health workers featured in the video expressed frustration, stating that the absence of basic amenities was affecting their ability to provide adequate care, especially during emergencies.
Following the video’s release, the administrator of Ezzy College of Nursing, Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu, through legal representation, demanded compensation over what was described as a breach of privacy.
According to the claim, the recording was made during a staff meeting where participants were reportedly instructed not to bring recording devices. It was further alleged that the nurse secretly recorded the session without consent.
The incident has sparked reactions online, with many raising concerns about workplace conditions in public health facilities, as well as issues surrounding whistleblowing and freedom of expression.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances of the arrest or any formal charges filed against the nurse.
