Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially adopted former president Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the party.
The adoption was done on Saturday during a special national convention held by the faction at the party’s secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
Though, Jonathan was not in attendance at the convention but his certificate of return was collected on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, the member representing a constituency in Bayelsa State in the House of Representatives.
The Turaki-led group had originally scheduled the convention to take place at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja.
The planned venue was, however, affected by a directive from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which instructed hotel and event centre operators to transact only with political party leaderships recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC currently recognises the PDP leadership aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Security operatives were deployed to the vicinity of the A-Class Park and Event Centre on Saturday morning, restricting access to the location and compelling organisers to relocate the gathering.
Party officials subsequently informed journalists that the convention had been moved to another venue within the Area 10 district.
It was gathered that the faction is expected to announce a date for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to Jonathan at a later time.
