Nigeria defender Igoh Ogbu has expressed strong confidence that the Super Eagles will successfully defend their Unity Cup title after booking a place in the final with a convincing victory over Zimbabwe in London.
The Super Eagles produced a composed and disciplined display to defeat Zimbabwe 2-0 at The Valley Stadium, with debutant Femi Azeez emerging as the star of the night after scoring both goals on his first appearance for the national team. The victory secured Nigeria’s qualification for the final of the 2026 Unity Cup tournament and further strengthened optimism surrounding the team’s recent performances.
Speaking after the match, Ogbu praised the fighting spirit of the players and admitted that the encounter was more difficult than the final score suggested. The defender, who delivered a commanding performance in central defence, said the squad remained fully focused on retaining the trophy and making Nigerians proud.
According to him, the players understand the responsibility that comes with representing Nigeria and are determined to continue giving their best in every game.
“It was a difficult match, especially in the second half because Zimbabwe pushed hard and tried to create opportunities, but we stayed disciplined and focused,” Ogbu said after the game. “We are happy with the victory and reaching the final is very important for us. We came into this tournament with the mentality of defending our title and we believe we can achieve that.”
The former Flying Eagles defender also praised the unity within the squad and highlighted the importance of teamwork in helping the team secure positive results.
“We have a very good group of players with great understanding and commitment. Everybody wants to contribute and fight for the badge. Playing for Nigeria is always a huge honour and we know the expectations from the fans,” he added.
Nigeria started the match brightly and took the lead early through Azeez, who calmly finished from close range after a swift attacking move orchestrated by the midfield. The winger doubled the advantage later in the game with another composed finish, capping off an unforgettable debut performance for the young attacker.
The impressive display from Azeez immediately drew praise from supporters and football analysts, with many describing his performance as one of the standout moments of the tournament so far. His pace, movement, and confidence in the final third caused constant problems for the Zimbabwean defence throughout the encounter.
Head coach Eric Chelle also used the opportunity to test several new players as Nigeria continues preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the next Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was handed his senior debut for the Super Eagles and impressed with a composed performance between the posts, keeping a clean sheet and making important saves during key moments of the match.
The Unity Cup tournament has provided Nigeria with an opportunity to blend experienced internationals with emerging talents while also strengthening squad depth ahead of future competitive fixtures. Football observers believe the tournament could play a major role in helping the coaching crew identify players capable of becoming long term assets for the national team.
Nigeria entered the competition as defending champions after winning the previous edition of the Unity Cup. The tournament, which features national teams from different regions and communities, was organized to celebrate cultural diversity, football excellence, and unity among nations with strong diaspora representation in the United Kingdom.
The Super Eagles have so far demonstrated attacking quality, defensive discipline, and improved coordination during the competition, giving supporters renewed optimism about the future of the team under the current technical setup.
Fans have also reacted positively to the emergence of younger players within the squad, especially after recent criticism surrounding inconsistency and lack of depth in some positions. Many supporters believe performances like the one against Zimbabwe reflect the growing competitiveness within the team.
Nigeria will now shift attention to the final where they are expected to face either Jamaica or India in what promises to be an exciting contest. The Super Eagles will be hoping to finish the tournament strongly and successfully retain the Unity Cup trophy.
For Ogbu and his teammates, the mission remains clear. The defender insisted that the squad is fully prepared to continue fighting until the title is secured once again.
“Our focus now is the final,” he said. “We must recover well, stay concentrated, and prepare properly because we want to bring the trophy home again for Nigerians.”
