Okowa, Atiku’s presidential running mate, dumps PDP, joins APC

Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice presidential candidate, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria.
The mass defection was announced on Wednesday following an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Asaba, Delta State.
Okowa, in a video address to supporters before the formal announcement, assured them that he would choose the best path forward for the people.
“Be assured that we will not go in the wrong direction. We will take the best direction, the best path for our people,” he said.
This significant political shift is expected to have far-reaching implications ahead of the 2027 general elections. Okowa’s defection is particularly notable given his role as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
The development marks a major boost for the APC in Delta State and potentially strengthens the party’s position in the region.
Diaspora Digital Media had earlier reported that Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has defected from the opposition PDP ruling APC.
Sheriff announced his defection after a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo has commended the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori over his defection.
Keyamo said the Delta State Governor has shown courage and boldness by defecting to the ruling party.
In a post on X, Keyamo said finally Delta State is now APC.
“Today is the day the Lord has made in Delta State. Finally, finally, Delta is APC!” Keyamo wrote on X.
He also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his leadership qualities that have attracted key politicians to the ruling party.
He said, “Thank you, Mr. President, for your leadership that has attracted the best to our Party.
“Thank you, my leader & Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori for your foresight and courage in taking this bold decision,” Keyamo said.
