Olympics: Kenyan marathon legend Kipchoge set for historic appearance

Renowned Kenyan marathoner Eliud Kipchoge is poised to make history at the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics by becoming the first athlete to secure three Olympic gold medals in the marathon event.

This would cement Kipchoge’s status as one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

As he prepares to compete in his fifth Olympics, Kipchoge emphasized that the Games represent more than just a platform for winning medals. “The Olympic Games promote freedom of association, bringing together athletes from over 100 countries to compete and unite,” he said. “For me, it’s about participation, not just victory. I aim to inspire my country and the world to embrace running as a way of life.”

Kipchoge will be joined by fellow Kenyan athletes Benson Kipruto and Alexander Munyao in the men’s marathon, and he is confident that they can achieve an unprecedented podium sweep. “My teammates are exceptional, energetic, and disciplined athletes. I trust that we will perform well and make the podium,” he stated.

However, Kipchoge remains cautious about the strong competition from rival nations, particularly Ethiopia, Uganda, and athletes with East African roots representing other countries. “I respect all competitors. Everyone at the Olympics represents their country, and I won’t underestimate anyone,” he acknowledged.

Kipchoge’s illustrious career spans over two decades, with a remarkable transition from track to road running.

After failing to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics, he shifted his focus to marathons and has since dominated the sport, securing 15 victories in 18 marathons, including 12 wins in the Marathon Majors and setting the world record twice.
