Paris: 76 years old movie star faces trial over sexual assault

Veteran French actor Gérard Depardieu has on Monday March 24, 2025, appeared in a Paris court over allegations of sexually assaulting two women during a 2021 film shoot.
The 76-year-old actor has strongly denied all allegations, maintaining that he is innocent of the accusations brought against him in court.
According to reports, Depardieu has being detained for questioning since April 29, 2024, at a Paris police station regarding sexual assault accusations made by two women.
If convicted, Depardieu faces up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000, according to French legal provisions.
The case is regarded as a major test for the #MeToo movement in France, where societal attitudes have evolved more slowly.
Depardieu briefly addressed journalists outside the courthouse, saying “I’m okay”, before entering the courtroom to respond to all questions asked.
His lawyer, Jérémie Assous, claimed that the accusations were politically motivated, stating, “The truth is on our side in court.”
Prosecutors allege Depardieu groped a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director during the filming process and beyond.
Reports also claimed he trapped one woman with his legs, before groping her publicly, while also using obscene language against her.
The second victim alleged she was assaulted multiple times, both on set and outside, in a completely different location.
Tensions ran high inside the courtroom, as one of the complainants broke down in tears while her lawyer read her statement.
Sitting beside her, the second accuser placed a hand on her shoulder, in a moment of emotional support and solidarity.
Outside the courtroom, feminist demonstrators described the case as historic, highlighting the importance of fighting against sexual violence in France.
The trial comes in the wake of other high-profile cases, including the legal battle involving women’s rights activist Gisèle Pelicot.
Depardieu is also under investigation for a separate rape allegation, following a complaint filed by actress Charlotte Arnould in 2018.
That case remains active, adding to the growing legal troubles faced by one of France’s most celebrated film personalities.
Due to health concerns, including diabetes and past heart surgery, the court has limited daily sessions to six hours with breaks.
The verdict is expected at a later date, as the world continues to follow developments in this high-profile legal battle.
