PDP blast Edo governor for Uromi killings, demands action
DDM News

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of failing to ensure security in the state.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, the party condemned the mob killing of seven individuals in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The PDP linked the killings to the recently restructured vigilante group introduced by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.
In a statement on Friday, PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman Anthony Aziegbemi blamed state security forces for influencing the mob violence.
He warned that citizens, feeling abandoned by the government, have resorted to taking justice into their own hands.
The PDP expressed concern over the rising insecurity, including killings, abductions, and sexual violence across different parts of the state.
The party stated that the lawlessness among residents reflects the administration’s failure to uphold justice and maintain order.
More than 100 deaths have been recorded due to violent attacks in Edo over the past few months.
The PDP urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency to address the worsening security situation.
The party compared Edo’s crisis to Rivers State, where federal intervention helped curb escalating violence and insecurity.
The PDP accused Governor Okpebholo of neglecting security while focusing on reversing the achievements of the previous administration.
The party called for urgent and decisive action to halt further killings and restore peace in the state.
Background of the security crisis
Edo State has experienced a surge in violent crimes, including kidnappings, targeted killings, and inter-community clashes.
Residents live in fear due to increasing criminal activities that have intensified over the past year.
The security situation worsened after the current administration reorganized local vigilante groups in different communities.
Although the restructuring aimed to improve security, opposition groups argue it has increased lawlessness in many areas.
Reports suggest that some vigilante members have been involved in extrajudicial killings and other unlawful activities.
The PDP believes that the failure of state security forces to respond effectively has emboldened criminal elements.
Governor Okpebholo, who took office in 2024, has faced criticism for failing to address security concerns.
His administration has struggled to contain the rising violence and prevent further bloodshed in the state.
Many citizens have lost confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and properties.
Observers argue that the vigilante restructuring was implemented without adequate oversight and community engagement.
The opposition insists that a lack of strategic planning has worsened insecurity rather than reducing it.
Some community leaders have voiced concerns about the composition and conduct of the vigilante groups.
There have been allegations of human rights abuses linked to security operatives and informal security outfits.
The PDP insists that only a state of emergency can restore order and guarantee the safety of Edo residents.
Security analysts have warned that failure to act decisively could lead to further unrest in the state.
The federal government has yet to respond to the PDP’s call for intervention in the ongoing crisis.
Public pressure continues to mount as citizens demand urgent solutions to the state’s security challenges.
The Edo government has not issued an official statement addressing the opposition’s claims and recommendations.
The situation remains tense as residents await decisive action to curb further violence and instability.
