PDP trustees call for NEC meeting to hold in February
DDM News
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is held in February 2025.
This will allow party leaders to address and resolve key issues within the party.
The call for the meeting comes as the party continues to navigate internal challenges and disputes.
In an exclusive interview with Diaspora digital media (DDM), PDP BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara emphasized the critical nature of the February NEC meeting.
He stressed that it would provide an essential platform for discussing the party’s unresolved issues.
Since Umar Damagum assumed the role of acting National Chairman following the court-ordered removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, there have been growing concerns.
There have been increasing calls from within the party for Damagum’s resignation.
The party has been in a state of crisis, which has prompted more vocal demands for stability and leadership clarity.
During the 98th NEC meeting, held on April 18, 2024, party leaders approved several crucial decisions.
These included the formation of a reconciliation and disciplinary committee, and the conduct of both ward and state congresses.
They also tasked the North Central caucus with consulting on the replacement of the acting National Chairman.
Furthermore, the 98th NEC scheduled the next meeting for August 15, 2024.
However, this meeting was first postponed to October 24, 2024, before being rescheduled once more to November 28, 2024.
Most recently, the meeting was indefinitely postponed, contributing to further tensions within the party.
As a result of these delays, the PDP Governors Forum, which is led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has repeatedly urged the NWC to ensure the NEC meeting takes place no later than February 2025.
The lack of a scheduled meeting has fueled frustration, with many party members expressing concerns about the negative impact on the party’s unity and cohesion.
On December 5, 2024, Adolphus Wabara had previously voiced his concerns.
He stated that the ongoing delay in convening the NEC was undermining the trust and confidence of PDP members.
He argued that without the meeting, the party risked further internal divisions.
Wabara also revealed that the BoT would soon be meeting with key figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and members of the NWC.
They aim to foster unity within the party and the country at large.
Wabara reiterated that the February NEC meeting was essential.
He maintained the BoT’s position that the gathering must take place as scheduled.
He said, “The NEC meeting is vital. That is why we have advised the NWC to hold the meeting in February. This will provide an opportunity for party leaders to discuss and resolve some of the outstanding issues that have been lingering for a while.”
He also noted that in the coming days, the BoT would make contact with Nyesom Wike.
They would work towards organizing a meeting with other significant party members to discuss both internal party matters and broader national issues.
In response to questions about the timing of the NEC meeting, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba acknowledged the importance of convening the NEC as soon as possible.
Speaking with Sunday DDM, Ologunagba emphasized that the NWC had a responsibility to ensure the meeting took place in a timely manner.
“We have a responsibility to convene the NEC,” Ologunagba stated.
“The various organs of the party have emphasized that, and we will ensure the NEC takes place soon. In that meeting, we will discuss several issues, including the ongoing litigation concerning the PDP National Secretary.”
While the NWC has not yet confirmed a specific date for the meeting, it remains clear that party leaders are under growing pressure.
They need to resolve the issues that have been festering for several months.
The NEC meeting, whenever it occurs, will be a critical moment for the PDP to address its leadership crisis.
It will also reestablish a sense of unity and direction moving forward.
