Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has reacted after President Bola Tinubu extended an appeal to him to join forces and work together.

Tinubu in his 2024 New Year’s address begged Obi and Atiku, his former presidential election rivals, to set aside their differences and focus on the country’s future, saying that the election period is over.

Tinubu said, “In this new year, let us resolve that as joint heirs to the Nigerian Commonwealth, we will work for the peace, progress, and stability of our country. I extend this call to my political opponents in the last election. The election is over. It’s time for all of us to work together for the sake of our country.”

Reacting to the appeal, Peter Obi in his own New Year message said his party, Labour Party is ready to take up a new role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

He said the party will keep the Tinubu’s government on its toes to protect the interest of Nigerians.

“We in the Labour Party have undertaken in the national interest and in our undying commitment to a New Nigeria that is possible, to remain firmly in opposition and, as such, must remain focused going forward.

“We will continue ongoing discussions and efforts for the Labour Party to adjust to our new role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

“We will continue to constructively engage all Nigerians and our friends, who have now realised the vast implications of the road not taken; and the folly of national interest decisions predicated on sentiments and primordial interests.”

Obi also said the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections was contested and remained so, on record, “but the Courts of law have spoken; so be it.”
