The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 70-year-old man, Sabo Manigi, for allegedly stabbing a police inspector, Musa Nasiru, to death.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the tragic incident occurred in Mashegu Local Government Area and was reportedly linked to a love triangle involving Manigi’s son.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble started when a young woman, whom Manigi’s son was courting, was asked to choose between him and Inspector Nasiru.
To the young man’s heartbreak, she selected the police officer, leaving him devastated.
The shock of the rejection was so overwhelming that the young man reportedly fainted and had to be revived.
Despite regaining consciousness, he remained inconsolable, struggling to come to terms with the woman’s decision.
Manigi, deeply angered by his son’s distress, confronted the police officer on his way home from work.
He blamed Nasiru for his son’s emotional suffering and accused him of destroying the young man’s happiness.
Eyewitnesses reported that Manigi warned the inspector that there would be consequences for his actions.
“He told him, ‘You have ruined my son’s life, and I will not forgive you,’” an eyewitness recounted.
What initially seemed like a verbal confrontation took a violent turn when Manigi pulled out a knife and attacked the officer.
The police inspector sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida.
Despite efforts to save him, Nasiru succumbed to his wounds, leaving the police community in mourning.
Following the attack, Manigi fled the area, seeking refuge in Bode-Saadu, Kwara State, in an attempt to evade capture.
However, police officers launched a manhunt, deploying intelligence and surveillance operations to track down the suspect.
The Niger State Police Command coordinated with their counterparts in Kwara to locate and apprehend Manigi.
After weeks of searching, police officers traced him to Bode-Saadu and arrested him on February 25.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that Manigi had confessed to the crime.
“Our officers followed intelligence leads and tracked him to Kwara, where he was arrested. He has admitted to the killing and remains in custody,” Abiodun said.
The police spokesperson added that an investigation was ongoing, and the suspect would be charged in court upon completion of the process.
