Lagos State police have arrested a man named Engr. Chibuike Azubike, 65, who claimed to be the “Obi of Lagos”.
He was arrested alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57, Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65, and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41.
The group was planning to unveil a ₦1.5 billion palace at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on September 13, 2025.
In a statement issued by DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, spokesman of the command on Wednesday, the police said the suspects were apprehended in Ikeja following intelligence that the group intended to hold an unlawful installation ceremony.
The police said they sealed off the venue to forestall any breach of peace and protect unsuspecting members of the public.
Security operatives, including the Eko Strike Force and other tactical squads, were deployed to ensure that the event did not hold and that order was maintained in the area.
The police confirmed that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. They will be charged to court at the conclusion of the probe.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned residents to be wary of impostors attempting to exploit cultural and traditional institutions.
“He reiterates that such actions are unlawful, contrary to the statutes of Lagos State, and capable of breaching the peace of the society. The Command will continue to enforce the law firmly and decisively against any individual or group engaging in acts that undermine legality, public order, and the integrity of the state,” the statement read.
