IBADAN, OYO STATE — The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 16 students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, over alleged involvement in cult-related activities following a targeted security operation in the area.
The arrests were carried out at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where security operatives reportedly acted on intelligence linking the suspects to ongoing cultism activities within and around the institution.
Police sources disclosed that the operation was part of a broader crackdown on cult-related violence and criminal networks that have raised concerns about safety in tertiary institutions across the state.
According to preliminary findings, some of the arrested individuals are suspected to have connections to recent violent incidents, including cases under investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Security officials confirmed that weapons, including firearms and axes, were recovered during the operation, raising further concerns about the scale and organisation of the alleged activities.
The presence of such weapons within a student environment has intensified fears among residents and stakeholders, prompting calls for stricter surveillance and preventive measures within campuses.
Authorities stated that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigations continue to determine the extent of their involvement and possible links to other criminal acts.
The police command emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order, particularly within educational institutions, where safety is considered a top priority for students and staff.
Cultism has remained a recurring security challenge in parts of Nigeria, often associated with violent clashes, intimidation, and disruption of academic activities.
In Oyo State, authorities have repeatedly launched operations to dismantle cult groups and prevent escalation of violence, especially in urban centres like Ibadan.
Stakeholders in the education sector have called for stronger collaboration between school management, security agencies, and community leaders to address the root causes of cultism and protect students.
They argue that beyond enforcement, there is a need for awareness campaigns, mentorship programmes, and support systems that discourage youth involvement in criminal networks.
The latest arrests highlight ongoing efforts by security agencies to respond decisively to threats within campuses and restore confidence in the safety of learning environments.
As investigations progress, the police are expected to provide further updates, including possible prosecutions, while continuing operations aimed at curbing cult-related activities in the state.
