KANO, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Police Force in Kano State has arrested a man accused of defrauding university students through fake ushering job offers and stealing dozens of mobile phones and other valuables.

Police authorities said the suspect allegedly used fraudulent recruitment promises to lure students, particularly young job seekers searching for temporary employment opportunities.

Investigators revealed that the suspect reportedly organised fake ushering arrangements and invited victims under the guise of job placement and event coordination.

According to the police, the operation targeted students from tertiary institutions within Kano and surrounding areas.

Authorities disclosed that about 29 mobile phones and several personal belongings were allegedly stolen from the victims during the scheme.

The suspect was apprehended following complaints lodged by affected students who reported losing their valuables after attending the supposed recruitment exercise.

Police officials said preliminary investigations suggest the operation may have been carefully planned to exploit the economic difficulties facing young people and students.

The incident has sparked concerns over rising cases of employment-related scams targeting unemployed youths across Nigeria.

Security experts warn that fraudsters increasingly use fake job opportunities, training programmes, and recruitment advertisements to deceive vulnerable individuals.

Authorities advised students and job seekers to verify the authenticity of job offers before attending recruitment events or sharing personal information.

The police also urged the public to avoid making payments or surrendering valuables during suspicious employment processes.

Observers say the growing unemployment rate and economic pressure have created opportunities for fraudsters to manipulate desperate job seekers.

The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to investigating the matter and prosecuting those found responsible.

Officials added that efforts are ongoing to determine whether other accomplices were involved in the alleged operation.

The police encouraged members of the public to promptly report suspicious job advertisements and fraudulent recruitment schemes to security agencies.

Attention now shifts to the ongoing investigation as authorities work to recover stolen items and identify possible additional victims linked to the case.
