Award-winning Nigerian music producer Shizzi has voiced concerns about the current state of Afrobeats music.

He described the genre as being in a weird phase over the past two years, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports.

Shizzi is well-known for producing hit songs with international superstar Davido.

He made his observations public through a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Afrobeats has been going through a weird phase in the past two years,” he wrote on May 19, 2025.

He added, “So many songs come out every day, but only a few truly resonate.”

His comments have sparked renewed debate among Nigerian music fans and industry professionals.

According to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), many experts believe the genre is losing its originality and cultural richness.

Critics argue that an overwhelming volume of new songs does not equal better quality.

Listeners say many new Afrobeats tracks lack originality and meaningful lyrical content.

One connoisseur commented, “Afrobeats is oversaturated right now, and everyone’s dropping, but few are connecting.”

He added, “Quality should be prioritized over virality. We need more timeless vibes, less TikTok bait.”

Many believe social media has influenced the shift in Afrobeats production values.

Some producers now focus on creating songs that go viral in short video clips.

Industry watchers say this trend could damage the genre’s long-term artistic credibility.

Shizzi’s comments add to calls for a return to traditional Afrobeats values.

Veteran musicians have also urged artists to focus on melody, storytelling, and cultural identity.

Afrobeats has reached global audiences, but some say international success comes with a loss of authenticity.

Despite this, some insiders view this phase as part of the genre’s natural evolution.

They believe the genre will eventually balance commercial appeal with artistic depth.

Shizzi’s views are seen as constructive criticism from a respected voice in the industry.
