Simon Ekpa claims to secure $57.5b loan, set to declare Biafra in December

In a stunning development, Simon Ekpa, factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and self-styled Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has announced that his group had successfully secured a whopping $57.5 billion loan to fund the formation of a Biafran government.

Ekpa made this claim on his Twitter page on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

This move is set to propel the Biafra movement forward, as Ekpa declared that the defunct state of Biafra would be re-declared on December 2, 2024.

Ekpa further claimed that the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, was instrumental in facilitating the loan.

He took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Dr. Okonjo Iweala for her role.

Expectedly, this development has sent ripples through Nigeria, particularly the South East where Ekpa comes from, sparking both interest and concern.

The pro-Biafra group, led by Ekpa, has been at the forefront of the Biafran independence movement, seeking to establish a sovereign state.

With this claimed financial backing, the group’s ambitions may have received a substantial boost.

However, it remains to be seen how Nigeria and the international community will respond to these developments.

As the December 2, 2024, re-declaration day approaches, tensions are spreading.

The Nigerian government has previously labeled Ekpa a terrorist and called for his extradition from Finland.

The situation is complex, with multiple factions and interests at play.

Details of the Loan and Re-Declaration

Ekpa did not provide comprehensive details on the loan’s terms, lenders or the process of allocation.

However, this significant financial backing is to boost the BRGIE’s ambitions.

The re-declaration of Biafra on December 2, 2024, is to mark a critical milestone in the independence movement.

The date’s significance and potential consequences remain unclear.

International reaction to Ekpa’s claim

The international community is closely watching developments.

The involvement of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, a respected global figure, adds complexity.

Nigeria’s government has previously dismissed Ekpa’s claims, but this loan and re-declaration plan may prompt stronger action.

Ekpa’s move and possible outcome

The escalating tensions between Nigeria and the pro-Biafra group raise pressing concerns for the Southeast region.

A possible conflict would disrupt trade, aggravate economic instability and affect livelihoods.

Also, they will worsen existing humanitarian challenges such as displacement, violence, malnutrition and food insecurity.

Meanwhile, this will come in the wake of devastating floods that have already affected thousands of people.

As tensions build towards the declared December 2 re-declaration of Biafra, the region teeters on the brink of crisis.
