Sowore released after brief detention at Lagos Airport

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, was released minutes after his arrest at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Sunday morning.

Sowore had announced his arrest on social media, stating that his passport was seized by Nigerian Immigration officials, who claimed to have orders to detain him.

He linked his arrest to the “fascist @officialAbat regime’s” clampdown on dissent and fear of the upcoming #FearlessINOctober revolt.

However, in a subsequent post, Sowore revealed that he had been released by the Nigerian Immigration Service, and his passport had been returned to him.

He wrote, “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention, and my passport released back to me.”

The arrest and release of Sowore come after a leaked DSS memo ordering his arrest upon arrival in Nigeria was circulated on social media.

Sowore’s flight from Washington Dulles International Airport had arrived in Lagos at around 9:43 am on Sunday.
