Spending Sodiq: Mohbad’s ally cries out over planned DPP prosecution
Mohbad’s ally, Mr. Ayobami Sodiq, popularly known as “Spending Sodiq,” has cried out over a recent online publication signifying that the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has planned to prosecute him over the death of Ilerioluwa Imoleayo Aloba popularly known as Mohbad.
Sodiq’s lawyers, Bonajo Badejo & Co., represented by Stephen Ehinmowo, expressed concern that prosecuting Spending Sodiq while the coroner’s inquest is still ongoing would be unjust and unfair.
Following Mohbad’s tragic death on September 12, 2023, the Lagos State government sprang into action, initiating a coroner’s inquest into the sudden passing of Imoleayo, aka Mohbad, on September 26, 2023.
According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the move was in accordance with sections 14 and 15 of the Coroner System Laws of Lagos State to uncover the truth behind Mohbad’s demise.
Spending Sodiq’s lawyer explained that he fully cooperated with the inquest into Mohbad’s death, providing clear evidence and withstanding rigorous cross-examination without damaging his credibility.
The legal team for Ayobami maintained that evidence presented is enough to clear him of any wrongdoing in Mohbad’s tragic passing.
Ayobami’s solicitors further emphasized the significance of the coroner’s inquest findings in determining the cause of Mohbad’s death, which will play a pivotal role in informing any subsequent legal actions.
Besides, the lawyers stressed that initiating prosecution without comprehensive facts and conclusive evidence is both premature and unwarranted.
They contended that such haste not only jeopardizes fairness, potentially leading to unfounded charges, but also compromises the integrity of the entire judicial process.
Spending Sodiq stated that “for the sake of fairness and justice, coroner’s inquest should be completed and its findings taken into account before the DPP initiates any criminal proceedings, safeguarding against potential miscarriages of justice.”
He appealed to the state government to allow the inquest run its course without interference, fostering an environment of fairness, impartiality, and accountability.
His solicitors requested the Director of Public Prosecutions to reevaluate its decision, emphasizing the importance of awaiting the inquest’s outcome before pursuing prosecution.
