Following Starmer’s Exit, Peter Obi Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation Over Governance Failures

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, arguing that worsening economic hardship, insecurity and declining public services show a failure of leadership.
Obi made the call on Monday while reacting to the resignation announcement of former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In a post on X, Obi said Starmer’s decision to step down reflected a culture of accountability that leaders in struggling democracies should embrace.
“This morning, I listened to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation,” Obi wrote, adding that he closely follows global politics to understand why some countries succeed while others continue to struggle with governance and development.
According to him, Starmer’s departure was triggered by growing public dissatisfaction over a stagnant economy, rising living costs and unmet campaign promises.
Drawing a comparison with Nigeria’s political history, Obi recalled how Tinubu, before becoming president, repeatedly criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan and demanded his resignation over insecurity and economic difficulties.
He noted that Tinubu had also made several promises during the 2023 election campaign, including improving electricity supply, tackling corruption and raising living standards.
Obi argued that those promises remain largely unfulfilled.
“Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has worsened in many parts of the country, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than improved,” he said.
He further claimed that key sectors such as security, infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts have deteriorated under the current administration.
“We are in the worst possible condition,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra governor said political leaders should be held accountable for their performance and insisted that resignation should be considered when governments fail to meet the expectations of citizens.
“I join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over what I see as monumental failure in governance,” Obi said.
He added that such a step would help strengthen a culture of accountability and send a message that public office is a responsibility, not an entitlement.
“Only by ending the culture of impunity can we build a better future and achieve the New Nigeria that is possible,” he concluded.
