Stop using our uniform in your skits -EFCC warns content creators
Anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to skit makers and social media influencers to stop using its operational identities without permission.
This comes after an old video skit, “EFCC and Army Wahala,” resurfaced on social media, sparking concern over the unauthorized use of the Commission’s accoutrements.
In a statement posted on the agency’s official Facebook page on Monday morning, EFCC decried that “the video, deemed a caricature of the EFCC’s operational etiquette, portrays supposed operatives unleashing terror on suspects.”
“This depiction is not only embarrassing but also intentionally attempts to tarnish the EFCC’s image,” it added.
The statement continued: “in reality, EFCC operatives are trained to uphold decency, civility, and respect for the public, including those suspected of economic and financial crimes.
“They are not bullies, but refined modern law enforcement officers.”
It emphasized that it will not hesitate to take action against anyone found misusing its operational identities.
“Skit makers are advised to desist from unauthorized use to avoid facing consequences.
Impersonation
Impersonation, a serious cybercrime, has become a significant threat to Nigeria’s digital landscape.
Various forms of impersonation exist, including identity theft, corporate impersonation, and social media impersonation.
The consequences are dire, with victims suffering financial loss, reputation damage, and emotional trauma.
Nigerian laws, such as the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act 2004, aim to combat this menace.
Despite these laws, impersonation crimes continue to rise, with a 30% increase in reported cases between 2020 and 2023.
EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is Nigeria’s premier anti-graft agency, established in 2003 to combat economic and financial crimes.
The EFCC’s mandate includes investigating and prosecuting cases of corruption, money laundering, terrorism financing, and other financial malfeasances.
With its headquarters in Abuja and zonal offices across the country, the EFCC has made significant strides in recovering stolen assets, prosecuting high-profile cases, and promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
Despite facing challenges, the EFCC remains a vital institution in Nigeria’s fight against corruption, upholding the country’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and the rule of law.
