Troost Ekong promises to lead Super Eagles to AFCON and World Cup glory

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has fired up the hopes of Nigerian football fans by boldly declaring the team’s dual mission: winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The powerful statement comes as the team prepares to embark on a critical phase of international competition, with millions of supporters watching and waiting.

In a recent interview reflecting on his journey with the national team, the seasoned defender spoke with heartfelt pride and clear-eyed determination.

“Representing Nigeria is one of the greatest honours of my life,” Troost-Ekong said.

“We’ve had highs and lows, but the dream is still alive.

“We’re going for the AFCON title, and we want to be back at the World Cup.

“The journey continues, and we are fully committed.”

At 31, Troost-Ekong is one of the team’s most experienced figures, having featured prominently in recent AFCON and World Cup campaigns.

While Nigeria has come close to continental glory in recent years, the Super Eagles fell short of reclaiming the trophy last lifted in 2013.

Now, with a refreshed squad and renewed ambition, the team sees 2025 as the year to end the drought.

“The current group has the talent and the hunger to go all the way,” he said.

“What we need now is momentum, especially with the World Cup qualifiers starting. Every match matters.”

That hunger for success resonates with millions of fans across Nigeria and the diaspora, especially among younger football lovers aged 18 to 50.

Many of these fans grew up idolizing the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, and Vincent Enyeama.

For many, Troost-Ekong is part of a new generation tasked with writing the next chapter in Nigeria’s football legacy.

As he looked ahead to the challenges to come, Troost-Ekong stressed that it’s not just about individual talent, but about unity and discipline, on and off the pitch.

“There’s a lot of work ahead, but we are ready for it,” he said.

“We need everyone, coaches, players, officials, and fans, to pull in the same direction.”

That call to unity is especially important at a time when Nigerian football is craving consistency.

While the Super Eagles remain one of the most talented teams in Africa, recent years have seen uneven performances and organizational hiccups.

Troost-Ekong believes that can change, if the entire football ecosystem in Nigeria comes together.

He also emphasized the need for tactical preparation and mental strength, particularly against the continent’s other footballing giants.

“AFCON is a battle, and World Cup qualification isn’t easy,” he noted.

“You need more than just skill, you need to be tactically sharp, mentally ready, and play every game like a final.”

Troost-Ekong’s leadership, both on and off the field, has drawn praise.

Known for his calm demeanor, commanding presence in defense, and passion for the green and white jersey, he is often seen as a bridge between Nigeria’s seasoned veterans and its rising stars.

As the team gets set for a crucial run of qualifiers, fans will be watching every move, especially with rival nations like Senegal, Morocco, and Egypt all gearing up for their own title charges.

For Nigeria’s millions of football fans, Troost-Ekong’s words are more than a rallying cry, they are a promise that the Super Eagles aren’t settling for second best.

The team’s eyes are firmly on the prize, and with one of their most vocal and respected leaders at the helm, belief is building.

Whether at home, in sports bars across Lagos, or in diaspora communities from London to Houston, Nigerian fans will be hoping that this renewed mission brings back the glory days, and perhaps a fourth AFCON title.

As Troost-Ekong put it best: “The dream is still alive.”
