Suspect Opens Fire Near White House, Secret Service Neutralizes Gunman

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A major security incident unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening after a suspect opened fire at a security checkpoint, prompting a swift response from U.S. Secret Service agents who fatally shot the attacker during the confrontation.

Officials confirmed that the suspect was killed at the scene, while a civilian bystander was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House perimeter.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect approached a security checkpoint and suddenly opened fire toward officers stationed in the area, triggering an immediate exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as multiple shots were heard, forcing people nearby to seek cover while security forces moved in rapidly to contain the threat.

Secret Service agents responded within seconds, returning fire and neutralizing the suspect during the exchange.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect succumbed to injuries sustained in the shootout.

No Secret Service officers were injured during the incident.

During the chaos, a bystander was struck by gunfire and rushed to a hospital. Officials have not yet clarified whether the injury resulted from the suspect’s initial shots or return fire from agents.

The White House complex was immediately placed on lockdown as security personnel secured the perimeter and conducted a full sweep of the area.

Staff members and journalists on site were directed to shelter locations until authorities confirmed that the situation was under control.

The lockdown lasted for about 40 minutes before normal activity gradually resumed under heightened security measures.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident and was not harmed.

Authorities are working to determine the suspect’s identity and motive, with further details expected as the investigation continues.
