LAGOS, Nigeria — Super Eagles defender Benjamin Tanimu has ruled out an immediate return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), stating his preference to continue his professional career abroad despite recent setbacks that have limited his playing time.
The 24-year-old central defender, who currently plies his trade with Tunisian side Esperance Sportive de Tunis, acknowledged the difficulties he has faced in recent months but remains determined to prove his worth on the international stage. Tanimu, who has been capped by the Super Eagles, has struggled for regular minutes at Esperance, leading to speculation about a possible return to the Nigerian top flight.
However, the defender has made it clear that he is not considering a move back to the NPFL at this stage of his career. “I am not thinking about returning to the NPFL. My focus is on continuing my career abroad and stabilising my situation here,” Tanimu said in an interview monitored on Friday.
Tanimu, who previously played for Bendel Insurance in the NPFL before making the switch to Tunisia, has been a part of the Super Eagles setup under head coach Eric Chelle. His performances for the national team have earned him recognition, but his club situation has raised questions about his development and playing time.
The defender’s preference to remain abroad reflects a growing trend among Nigerian players who view the NPFL as a stepping stone rather than a destination. The league has struggled to retain top talent, with many players seeking opportunities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East where salaries and exposure are significantly higher.
Despite his commitment to staying abroad, Tanimu’s situation remains fluid. He has been linked with moves to clubs in other African leagues and beyond, though no formal offers have been confirmed. His agent has reportedly been exploring options that would guarantee him more playing time and stability.
The defender’s decision is likely to be welcomed by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who has consistently advocated for his players to compete at the highest possible level. Tanimu’s versatility and defensive solidity have made him a valuable asset for the national team, and regular football will be essential for him to maintain his form.
For now, Tanimu remains focused on his present club, Esperance, while keeping his options open for the future. He is determined to break into the starting lineup and make a significant impact for the Tunisian giants.
As the transfer window approaches, the defender’s resolve to remain abroad will be tested by potential suitors. However, his message is clear: the NPFL is not on his radar, at least for now.
