Taraba youth clashes continue despite truce efforts

Taraba State, Nigeria – Fresh violence has erupted in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, shattering a recently signed peace deal between farmers and Fulani herders.

Despite security forces’ mediation, hostilities resumed, leading to deadly reprisals, property damage, and rising instability.

Reports indicate that local youths from Badanwa provoked the conflict by attacking herders grazing near their farms, violating the peace accord.

In response, herders retaliated violently, killing two villagers from Munga Lelau in a brutal machete assault.

The situation quickly escalated beyond control.

Troops from Operation Lafiyan Jamaa rushed to the scene after a distress call on May 23 but found chaos unfolding.

While investigating, security forces clashed with armed bandits burning homes in Munga Lelau.

Two bandits were killed, and weapons, including a dane gun and a pistol, were seized. Additional arms were later found in Munga Doso village.

Security officials blame the violence on youths and leaders disregarding prior agreements.

“Attacking herders invites retaliation—this is the harsh reality,” an anonymous officer stated.

Repeated peace meetings failed to curb reckless actions, worsening tensions.

Conflict expert Bala Ibrahim insists violators must face consequences. “Endless warnings achieve nothing—accountability is crucial for lasting peace,” he argued.

Taraba state government and the security forces are now considering a curfew to halt further clashes and restore order.

Security patrols have increased to deter violence, but rebuilding trust remains difficult. Residents must support peace efforts for stability to return.

While challenges persist, dialogue and cooperation offer the best path forward.
