DDM News

A tragic incident has thrown the Farawa community of Kano State, Nigeria into mourning after a newlywed bride allegedly killed her husband just nine days into their marriage.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that 18-year-old Saudat Jibrin was apprehended by security operatives following the death of her husband, 30-year-old Salisu Idris.
The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Monday, May 5, 2025, inside their matrimonial home in Farawa Quarters.
The young couple had just gotten married on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in a union allegedly arranged by their respective families.
Local sources revealed that the marriage lacked mutual affection and understanding between the spouses.
Reports monitored from a local radio station indicated that the late Salisu Idris had expressed concerns about the marriage prior to the wedding.
Despite his reservations, he was reportedly persuaded by family members to go ahead with the ceremony.
It remains unclear what led to the fatal altercation, but community members allege that the argument between the couple turned violent.
Some eyewitnesses alleged that the suspect may have poisoned her husband before resorting to stabbing him during a heated exchange.
The gruesome nature of the incident shocked residents, leading to heightened tension in the community.
Angry youths attempted to lynch the suspect upon learning about the husband’s death.
However, the prompt arrival of security operatives at the scene prevented a possible mob action.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Saudat Jibrin, in a statement issued on Monday.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the suspect allegedly used a sharp knife to slit her husband’s throat.
He revealed that the Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Ibrahim Bakori, immediately deployed a team of detectives to the scene upon receiving a report of the incident.
The injured victim was rushed to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.
Sadly, he was declared dead by medical personnel shortly after arrival.
SP Kiyawa stated that the suspect is currently in custody at the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section.
She is expected to face prosecution for culpable homicide under the relevant provisions of the law.
The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not tolerate any form of violence or criminal behavior in the state.
He assured the public of the police’s commitment to a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
The spokesperson further urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement agencies.
He provided emergency contact numbers for members of the public to call in case of emergencies: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.
The incident has reignited discussions around the consequences of forced or family-arranged marriages in Northern Nigeria.
In many parts of the region, marriages are often initiated and concluded by families without sufficient input from the couple involved.
Such arrangements can sometimes lead to incompatibility, resentment, and emotional distress within the marriage.
Experts have raised concerns over the long-term impact of these unions, especially on young brides who are barely adults.
Gender rights activists have also warned that many cases of domestic violence and emotional abuse go unreported due to societal pressures.
The killing of Salisu Idris is a stark reminder of the need for more awareness, counseling, and legal reforms regarding marriage consent.
Residents of the Farawa community remain in shock as the case continues to generate public attention across the state.
The police have assured that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
As the matter unfolds, many Nigerians are calling for deeper societal reforms to protect individuals from the dangers of coerced relationships.
This case is now being closely followed by human rights advocates, women’s groups, and legal experts across the country.
With the suspect in custody and investigations ongoing, the public awaits justice for the late Salisu Idris.
