Retired police officers plan nationwide protests

Two students of Government Secondary School, Bichi, in Kano State have been tortured to death during a late-night attack inside the school hostel.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the assault occurred around 11:30pm on Sunday, July 14, 2025, but was reported to police the following day by the school principal, Yusuf Ado Yakasai.

According to the principal’s statement, a group of senior students allegedly lured four juniors into a hostel room where they were violently assaulted over allegations of engaging in “unnatural offences.”

The victims were identified as Hamza Idris (19, SS3B), Umar Yusuf (18, SS2C), Ibrahim Ibrahim (SS2B), and Aliyu M. Nasir (SS2C).

Two of the students, Idris and Yusuf, were confirmed dead at Bichi General Hospital.

The remaining two victims, Ibrahim and Nasir, are currently receiving treatment and are said to be responding positively.

The police have arrested 12 senior students in connection with the fatal incident.

Those in custody include:

Suleman Abdullahi

Ahmad Sanusi

Lawan Alasan Tambai

Aliyu Idris

Abubakar Abdulaziz (all from SS3A)

Ibrahim Nura

Hamza Isiyaku (SS3B)

Usaini Mamuda

Masaudu Idris

Yasir Murtala (SS3C)

Abubakar Muhammad (SS3D)

Police authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that anyone found culpable will be charged and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The shocking deaths have sparked outrage among education stakeholders and child rights advocates, with many calling for stricter enforcement of anti-bullying laws in schools.

Incidents of violent student-on-student aggression have been reported in several Nigerian boarding schools in recent years, but this appears to be one of the most fatal.

Stakeholders have also demanded that Kano State’s Ministry of Education immediately step in to probe the school’s internal safety mechanisms and assess the role of negligence.

Parents of the victims are reportedly devastated and demanding justice.

As of the time of this report, Government Secondary School, Bichi, has yet to release an official statement, but security has been heightened around the school premises.

Authorities are also working to determine whether school staff were aware of the attack or failed to prevent it.

This tragedy again raises concerns about the safety of students in boarding institutions across Nigeria, especially the need for monitoring and regulation of hostel activities after hours.

A legal team is expected to represent the families of the deceased, while the Kano State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on criminality in school environments.
