Uganda: Archbishop Ssemogerere condemns Pres. Museveni’s killer regime

Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has taken a bold stance against the Ugandan government’s handling of opposition politicians and their supporters, particularly those from the National Unity Platform.

In a statement, Ssemogerere condemned the government’s actions and questioned the integrity of the country’s electoral process.

“The way things are going, it seems the President is afraid of losing elections. If that is the case, then let him do away with elections altogether. But if he wants to continue with elections, then let him allow fair competition,” Ssemogerere said.

Ssemogerere, who was appointed as the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese by Pope Francis in December 2022, tasked President Museveni to either allow fair competition or do away with elections altogether, suggesting that the president fears being defeated.

This statement comes at a time when the country’s security operatives have been accused of brutally killing, maiming and arresting opposition supporters.

“The violence and intimidation we are witnessing today are a clear indication that the government is not committed to free and fair elections.

“As a religious leader, it is my duty to speak out against injustice and promote peace and democracy,” Ssemogerere added.
