ABUJA, Nigeria — The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reminded American citizens who hold dual nationality that they are required by law to use a valid U.S. passport whenever they enter or leave the United States, regardless of any other citizenship they may possess.
In a travel advisory published on its official X account on Sunday, the embassy stressed that the requirement applies to all U.S. citizens, including children who also hold citizenship of another country. The embassy urged dual nationals to ensure their U.S. passports are valid before making travel arrangements to avoid delays or complications at ports of entry.
According to the advisory, U.S. citizens with dual nationality are not permitted to use a foreign passport to apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), the online system that determines eligibility for travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. The embassy emphasized that ESTA is intended only for eligible foreign nationals and cannot be used by individuals who are U.S. citizens.
The mission explained that U.S. law requires all American citizens to present a valid U.S. passport when entering or departing the country. Failure to comply with the requirement could lead to travel disruptions, delays in boarding flights, or additional screening by immigration authorities.
