VDM apologizes after questioning by police over use of uniform in viral video

A popular Nigerian blogger, Mr. Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has apologized publicly after police questioning over the use of uniform in his viral social media video where he described himself as a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of an online division.
VDM made the apology in a post and a video he posted on his X handle account on Wednesday after he underwent serious questioning by the Nigerian police for alleged impersonation.
According to the report by the Diaspora Digital Media DDM, the social media influencer claimed ignorance of the established protocol, asserting that he is uninformed regarding the necessity of obtaining police permission before wearing its uniforms or attire.”
Consequently, VDM advised fellow content creators, strongly recommending that they secure the necessary approvals and clearances from relevant law enforcement authorities before incorporating police uniforms or similarly attired costumes into their content.
In the post on his X handle, he said “I am back from the police station after extensive interrogations and questioning because of my post where I said I was a CSP of an online division.”
“Rigorous discussions and questioning took place, and I gained more knowledge, as we learn everyday.”
“As we continually learn and grow, I realized that my previous video content may have been misinterpreted.”
“Specifically, I referred to myself as CSP, which in my intention denoted Chief Social Media Person, a title reflecting my online presence and influence,” VDM explained.
“However, it was brought to my attention that the Nigeria Police Force has a designated rank, CSP, which officially stands for Chief Superintendent of Police.”
“Furthermore, authorities noted that the attire I wore closely resembled the official uniform of the Nigerian Police, potentially leading to confusion.”
“Following the established protocols, using police attire requires obtaining formal permission, a requirement previously unknown to me.
“Regrettably, my actions may have suggested an affiliation or connection with the Nigeria Police, contrary to my genuine intent.”
VDM apologized, saying “I hereby extend my sincere formal apology to the Nigerian Police.”
“I acknowledge the vital role the force plays in maintaining law and order, and I deeply regret any actions or statements that may have brought disrespect or mockery to the institution.”
“I didn’t intend to impersonate the police in any way.
“I tender my sincere apologies to the Nigeria police force and the office of the inspector general of police.”
“And also, I would like to use this opportunity to tell the general public to always seek formal permission from the police or other law enforcement agencies before using anything that might look the same as their uniform.
“You might have the intention of using it for good but there are others that might want to use it for bad, so it’s important to get full approval before using anything that might seem impersonating the Nigeria Police Force,” he added.
Earlier on Saturday, SaharaReporters reported that the Nigeria Police Force has strongly denounced the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accessories by content creators, particularly in reference to the recent incident involving VDM.
The police in a statement reminded Nigerians that unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or accouterments constitutes a great criminal offense.
Also, a statement revealed the Police Force has initiated an investigation into the video featuring VDM, aimed at ascertaining the origin of the police equipment utilized and the authority governing his actions.
The Force disassociates itself from the unauthorized depiction, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of its uniform and insignia.
Besides, in 2022, the police expressed concerns over individuals especially movie makers, and skit makers using police uniforms and accouterments without its permission.
