WHO Seeks to Bolster Global Preparedness Against Future Pandemics
The World Health Organization (WHO) is intensifying efforts to enhance global preparedness for future pandemics, following the devastating impact of COVID-19.
This announcement was made at the organization’s annual meeting with government ministers and top envoys in Geneva, Switzerland.
Although the ambitious plan to adopt a comprehensive pandemic treaty has been put on hold, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that this setback does not constitute failure. He acknowledged the immense challenges faced by negotiators working under a tight timeline, noting that developing global treaties typically takes many years.
During the negotiation phase, the pandemic treaty was seen as a potentially groundbreaking development in WHO’s 76-year history. Despite missing the immediate goal, Tedros expressed confidence in eventual success, urging the assembly to find a way forward.
“We all wish we had reached a consensus on the agreement in time for this health assembly and crossed the finish line,” Tedros said in his opening remarks. “But we will continue working together to strengthen global preparedness against future pandemics.”
The WHO remains committed to enhancing global health security and mitigating the impact of future pandemics. Negotiations on the pandemic treaty will continue, with a renewed focus on finding a consensus that works for all member states.
