Peter Obi joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu because he wants to dismantle the structures keeping Nigerians in poverty and insecurity.

He believes the current administration’s economic mismanagement has led to soaring poverty rates, with 38.9% of Nigerians living below the poverty line, and high unemployment rates at 22.6%.

Obi’s decision to join the ADC coalition wasn’t taken lightly; it came after deep reflection on Nigeria’s situation and a desire to prioritize Nigerians’ welfare.

Obi aims to create a united front to tackle poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.

He’s dissatisfied with the current administration’s handling of the economy and its impact on citizens.

The ADC coalition offers a new platform for Obi to push for real reforms and sacrifice for the greater good.

Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who are both part of the Obi’s ADC alliance, believe they can achieve more together than they did in the 2023 elections when their divided votes led to Tinubu’s victory.

According to a report, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has explained his reasons for joining a newly formed opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

In a statement shared via his official X handle on Thursday, Obi said his decision was driven by the urgent need to confront Nigeria’s worsening poverty, insecurity, and leadership crisis through a collective and united effort.

Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential race, stressed that no single individual, party, or group could fix the country’s challenges alone.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy,” he wrote.

The former governor of Anambra State described his participation in the coalition as the product of careful thought and sincere reflection on Nigeria’s current trajectory.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he stated.

Obi emphasized that the coalition’s primary goal is to offer Nigerians a new kind of leadership — one that is competent, capable, and compassionate.

He argued that years of leadership failure, poor governance, and entrenched systems of corruption had left millions of Nigerians impoverished, insecure, and hopeless about the future.

“This coalition will save Nigeria,” Obi asserted, expressing confidence that the coming together of diverse opposition voices would chart a new course for the nation.

According to him, the country’s problems cannot be solved by entrenched political elites who have long benefited from a broken system.

Although the composition of the coalition continues to generate heated reactions in political circles, Obi urged Nigerians to look beyond political labels and personal grievances.

He argued that national interest must take precedence over personal ambition, noting that the collective good of the people should be the guiding force behind any political arrangement.

Obi’s announcement comes amid rising tensions between the presidency and a growing number of opposition figures, including former appointees of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, who have declared their intent to challenge Tinubu’s leadership in 2027.

As debates over the viability of the opposition alliance continue, Obi remains optimistic that it will provide the political alternative Nigerians are yearning for.
