Zimbabwe applies for BRICS membership

African nation Zimbabwe has formally applied to join the BRICS bloc, as announced by the country’s Foreign Minister, Amon Murwira, during his visit to Moscow on Thursday.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Murwira highlighted Zimbabwe’s dedication to fulfilling the membership criteria set by BRICS.
“BRICS represents one of the most significant platforms for economic cooperation, founded on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality among nations,” Murwira stated.

“Zimbabwe stands to benefit from any system that upholds these fundamental principles of human interaction and progress, and BRICS embodies these values.”
Murwira confirmed that Zimbabwe is actively working to align with BRICS’ conditions and is now awaiting a response from the group, which will be based on internal consensus.

The BRICS bloc, which includes eleven full members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia, has been steadily expanding its global influence.
The group was initially formed as BRIC in 2006, with South Africa joining in 2010 to make it BRICS.
The primary goals of BRICS include fostering economic cooperation, enhancing political coordination, promoting sustainable development, and advocating for a more inclusive global governance system.
Together, these nations represent over 40% of the global population and contribute significantly to global GDP and economic growth.
Key initiatives under BRICS include the New Development Bank, which funds infrastructure and sustainable development projects, and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, which provides financial support during economic crises.
BRICS does not have a single permanent leader, as it operates as a collaborative group.
However, the leadership rotates annually among the member countries, with the host country of the annual summit serving as the chair for that year.
The chair is responsible for setting the agenda and coordinating activities during their term.
As of 2023, South Africa held the chairmanship, and the 2024 chairmanship is held by Russia.
Each member country’s head of state or government represents their nation in BRICS discussions and decisions.
